Data breaches: an underestimated threat with a high price tag

At a time when data is the new gold, data breaches are a growing threat to organizations worldwide. Whether it’s customer information, medical data or internal documents: once personal data is out in the open, the consequences are incalculable.

Most leaks arise from improper e-mail use and entire databases of sensitive information being sent to the wrong sender.

Since the introduction of the GDPR in 2018, the number of data breach notifications has risen sharply. In the Netherlands alone, the Personal Data Authority (AP) received more than 20,000 reports in 2023. Although the AP is struggling with capacity issues, the willingness to enforce is clearly there. For example, the HagaZiekenhuis was fined €460,000 for poor security of patient data, and Booking.com was fined €475,000 for reporting a leak too late.

The facts don’t lie

At the European level, the measures are being enforced even more vigorously. The French regulator CNIL fined Google €50 million in 2019. In the United Kingdom, British Airways was fined £20 million, and Marriott £18.4 million. And most recently, in December 2024, Meta was fined a whopping €251 million by Ireland’s DPC for an incident in which data of 29 million users was released into the street.

The risk is real

What these cases have in common is that data breaches not only damage organizations’ reputations, but also lead to skyrocketing fines and legal complications. Added to this is the risk of loss of customer trust and long-term damage to the brand.

Data breaches due to human error

Data breaches are rarely caused by sophisticated hacks, but mainly by human error. Research shows that over 80% of incidents can be traced back to this. Employees sometimes unknowingly share sensitive files via e-mail or click on phishing links. Under time pressure, they choose the fastest but insecure route, leading to uncontrolled data sharing and reputational damage.
