FAQ - frequently asked questions

General
General
  • What is online backup?
  • Online backup is a way to create backup copies of data on so-called virtual drives. It is a more advanced, effective and safer alternative to traditional ways of storing data, such as CDs or portable drives.
  • How does online backup work?
  • Online backup is meant to protect you from losing data saved on your computer and allow it to be quickly recovered. Data can become lost, for example, due to accidental deletion, a malfunction, a virus attack or computer theft. The data is archived on external virtual drives, while the exchange between the user's computer and the virtual drive is done through the internet.
  • Why is it worth using online backup?
  • Online backup ensures the data is effectively and securely protected. Its most important quality is that a copy of the data is kept outside of the user's physical location. It also guarantees the confidentiality of the data thanks to encryption and transfer through a secure channel. Advanced and easy-to-use programs, such as msafe, allow one to forget about the manual time-consuming backing up of data.
About msafe
About msafe
  • What is msafe?
  • msafe is an application used to archive digital data on online virtual drives. Data from the user's computer is encrypted and sent to his msafe account where it is archived. The user can retrieve the data at any time they want, copying it from their account onto their computer.
  • Why is it worth choosing msafe?

    - Thanks to advanced security, the transfer and the archived data are effectively protected

    - You can manage your msafe account, the archive process and the recovery of data either online or using an application installed on your computer

  • Is msafe safe?
  • Yes, msafe satisfies all security conditions. Communication, payment information and data transfer are all protected by the powerful SSL protocol with 128-bit encryption. Your files are encrypted using the secure AES-256-bit encryption, used by the US National Security Agency to protect top secret documents.
  • Why is msafe so safe?
  • Because we are experts in terms of security and our solution is created, designed, produced and maintained at the highest possible level of security. All of the data archived by us is encrypted on your computer using AES 256-bit encryption and then sent through a secure channel called the Secure Socket Layer (yes, the exact same one used by online banks) to our servers. What does this mean in practice? Simple – no one, including msafe employees, has access to your data. Every file which leaves your computer is unreadable to anyone else. What's more, even you, if you don't have the key and password, will be unable to read the files and their contents. We only keep the result of the AES encryption, which in practice is impossible to crack. In order to imagine the difficulty of trying to illegally decrypt such a file, imagine that a machine capable of performing a billion billion (1018) operations a second would need 3x1051 years to check all possible combinations of the encryption key. That is an unimaginable amount of time with an unimaginable amount of resources. This was enough to for this encryption, used by msafe, to be declared by the US National Security Agency as suitable for the encryption of documents deemed top secret. Now you know your files are top secret.
The PRO account
The PRO account
  • What is the PRO account?
  • The Pro Account has been designed for users that have advanced backup needs. It's the perfect solution when you are using multiple PCs simultaneously (eg at home and at work) or if you are a small or medium-sized business. It is also suitable for large enterprises that are interested in using or outsourcing this type of service.

This is a professional and convenient adaptation of data protection to satisfy the needs and requirements of professional and business environments. The PRO account lets you focus on important things while we deal with file security.

  • What is the main difference between the PRO and msafe other accounts?
  • The main difference between the PRO and 10 GB account is the possibility to add an unlimited number of computers from which data will be archived by msafe. It's the perfect solution for companies in which some computers are protected by msafe, and their safety can be managed by one person administrating the account and the application.

The second basic option distinctive from other accounts is the ability to purchase additional capacity. This solution allows for flexible customization of capacity based on the amount of archived data.

  • Where can I find more information about the PRO account?
  • Detailed information regarding the PRO account offer can be found in the "For Business" tab. There is a description of the service, information about its use and the option to add capacity to computers and accounts.

The "PRO prices" tab shows detailed information about computer and data packets. There is an option to go to your msafe account and order.

  • How can I buy a PRO account?
  • The PRO Account can be bought in the "PRO prices" tab on the "For Business" page. When you buy the PRO account for 12 or 24 months you will receive an individual msafe account. You will be able to assign 1 computer and will receive 2 GB of basic account capacity. As a PRO account user you can order additional computers and increase the account capacity at any time.

  • How to add additional computers to the PRO account?
  • It is possible to add a new computer or computers to your account at any time. Computers will be added and will be available up to the expiration date of your account. Such a solution does not require you to buy computers "in reserve". You only pay for those computers that need protection.

To purchase additional computers, log into your msafe account at secure.msafe.co. There is a panel located in the "Profile" tab in the "Offer" category that will allow you to choose the number of computers you would like to order. Prices located in the panel change according to the period of time your account will be valid for. This is because you buy a computer only for the period that your account is active. Every additional computer means that your account capacity will be increased by 2 GB.

  • How can I increase the PRO account capacity?
  • You can increase the capacity of your account just like you add computers. If at any time, you will find that you need additional capacity to backup your data, you can buy extra GB of storage. You can choose from the following packages: 1 GB, 2 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, 25 GB, 50 GB and 100 GB.

Log into your msafe account at secure.msafe.co in order to purchase additional capacity. The "Profile" tab in the "Offer" page contains a list of proposed capacities that you can order. Prices change according to the amount of time your account will be active for. This is because you are buying additional capacity for the period of time that your msafe service will be active for.

  • How is the PRO account capacity divided between computers?
  • The PRO account capacity is available for all the computers. If the backup process of any of the computers will require more capacity it will be possible to use all the account space.

  • What does it mean that I can change the PRO account service completely?
  • This means that you can reconfigure the account during its activity period. You can change the duration (12 or 24 months), computers assigned or the account capacity. The new price is calculated as the diffrence between the cost of selected options and the amount that was unused in current service settings. The new service will be active from the moment the proper amount is booked on the msafe account.

If you would like to change the service type, log into your msafe account at secure.msafe.co. The "Profile" tab in the "Offer" page contains the service configuration panel. You can choose new settings and adjust your PRO account to your individual needs.

  • What is file versioning?
  • Versioning allows you to choose the number of file versions that will be archived on your msafe account. When you set the number of protected file versions you can be sure that even when you overwrite a file you will be able to recover its previous version. The number of versions that will be secured by msafe can be set in the internet user account in the "Profile" tab. You can choose whether you would like to recover a single file version or all of them during the restore process.

  • What file types are secured by the PRO account?
  • The PRO account users can choose any file type (including system and executable files) to be secured by msafe. This is one of the functions that distinct the PRO account from other ones becuase the 100 GB or Unlimited account do not have the possibility to back up system or executable files.

  • How big files can I backup with the PRO account?
  • With the PRO account you can backup files up to 4 GB! This is one of the functions that distinct the PRO account from other ones where the file size limit is 50 MB.

If you choose the PRO account you can be sure that even if the file that you work on will exceed 50 MB it will still be safe..

  • Yes. In the settings, in the Backup tab, you will find "Advanced configuration of files for backup". In the directory tree you can quickly and easily browse through the files on your computer and choose entire partitions, folders or just individual files to be backed up.
  • What does the backup process look like?
  • The process of archiving data begins with user authentication on msafe servers through a secure TCP channel on port 443 protected by the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and the verification of the digital signature on the msafe server certificate. After the user's login and password have been accepted, the msafe application looks for changed or new files in the folders and files marked for backup. Each of these files is encrypted with a secret key and the user's password using AES 256-bit encryption and then sent through SSL to the msafe servers. The saving of the encrypted files is confirmed by the servers and the msafe application marks the files as archived. At the same time, it appears on the client panel, which is available at secure.msafe.co. The msafe application ends the connection with the server and saves information about the last connection (time, IP address) in the msafe system logs.
  • How much data can I archive?
  • The account and the amount of data you save on it is all up to you! If you want to check if msafe is the solution for you and test it free of charge, choose the 1 GB account. If you wish to protect a larger amount of data, choose an account with 10 GB or an unlimited capacity.

  • The backup schedule is all up to you! You have two choices in terms of the backup plan: non-stop and every day. The non-stop option guarantees that msafe will archive the chosen drives and/or file types every time they are modified. If the every day option is picked, msafe will make a backup of the chosen drives and/or file types once a day at the time indicated by you.
  • Will the first backup take long?
  • The duration of the first backup depends on your internet connection and the amount of files you choose to be archived. For example, 1 GB of data will take about 45 minutes to be archived with a data transfer of 512kb, while sending 10 GB of data with a speed of 1024kb will take about 1 day.
  • What will the first backup save?
  • The type and amount of data saved during the first backup will depend on the settings you choose in the last step of the configuration wizard. You can choose a default group of files, which archives text files, popular document types, presentations, etc. from special folders located in your computer. Special folders are folders such as My documents, My images, My music - specific for your operating system. You can also choose your own set. In the latter instance, you choose the drives, types of data and even individual files that you want to archive during the first backup. msafe will continue to back up data according to the group you choose until you change the settings.

This can happen if the file is too big or there is not enough free space on the msafe account. Backup can also fail if there is a problem with accessing the file. This happens mostly when a file is locked by another process (i.e. opening the file in another application) or the application has no rights to access the file.
  • What does it mean that files are wating to be archived?
  • If you have set the backup plan to every day at a certain time and you are working on files all day, msafe automatically detects any changes and remembers that they need to be archived. In this case, a message will be visible until the next scheduled backup that changes and new files have been detected and are waiting to be archived.
  • For how long is backup suspended after pausing?
  • Suspending backup by clicking pause will stop the process for two hours. After that time, the backup will resume.
Recovering data
Recovering data
  • What does the process of retrieving files look like?
  • The process of recovering the data begins with user authentication on msafe servers through a secure TCP channel on port 443 protected by the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and the verification of the digital signature on the msafe server certificate. After the user's login and password have been accepted, the msafe application retrieves the encrypted files through SSL onto the client's computer. The msafe application then goes through each encrypted file, one by one, and using the AES 256 encryption key, as well as the user's password, decrypts the retrieved files. Decrypted files are saved in the location specified by the user and are ready to be used. The msafe application ends the connection with the server and saves information about the last connection (time, IP address) in the msafe system logs.
